Ethnography in the ‘Fuzzy Front End’ of New Product Development
Location: Maggiano's Buckhead
This presentation is a unique opportunity to hear perspectives on the role of Ethnography in New Product Development from both the ‘supplier-side’ and ‘client side’ Marketing Research perspectives.

New Product Development (NPD) is about developing useful products that consumers want and that can be manufactured and sold at a price that makes a fair profit. Credible contemporary notions of the NPD stress the importance of forming, early on: 1) deep understanding of the people who will use products, 2) how they will use them and 3) the context in which usage occurs. This is the true “Voice of the Customer”.

The existing tools of Marketing Research, such as focus groups, surveys and concept/usability testing, when used in isolation, don’t always help us understand consumers, their needs and desires. We are faced with such issues as: 1) the limitations of recall, 2) the fragile ‘belief-attitude-intention-behavior’ chain, 3) people’s difficulty in articulating their needs and desires and 4) External Validity (does what happens in a research setting apply to the real world?)

Failure to overcome these issues diminishes Marketing Research’s contribution to New Product Development. This comes at a time when Market Research is being called upon to take on an expanded leadership role in NPD. The first order of business is to improve the usefulness of our existing methods. One way that this is going to happen is greater emphasis on Observational methods. Observational methods go by many names, including ‘New Product Ethnography’, whose signature attributes include: 1) observation of people doing whatever it is they do on their own turf, 2) qualitative in approach, 3) inductive in nature (does not start with hypotheses), 4) ‘Participant-Observation’ (Interaction with Research Participants) and 5) Depth Interviewing (Long-Open-ended Interviews)

Unlike traditional Anthropology, New Product Ethnography emphasizes actionable insights into consumer behavior and lifestyle activities, consumer preferences for product features, form factors, materials, color, patterns of use and purchase.

As it turns out, New Product Ethnography also helps us to improve the strength of our ‘legacy’ methods. For example, the actionable insights from field observation help us to construct the hypotheses and identify the right questions to ask on surveys, as well as whom to survey. It helps us to choose the most fruitful issues for focus groups (and who to include as well). It also helps us to select the most appropriate participants and the tasks they should perform in concept tests and usability tests.

Don Rickert and Jay Heisler will explain all of the above in detail and present a new Stage Gate model for navigating the difficult but essential ‘Fuzzy Front End’ of NPD.

Location: The High Museum of Art
Following a decade of unprecedented growth in exhibitions, community programming and collection building, the High Museum of Art has completed a major expansion designed by Renzo Piano. The project is the cornerstone of the overall upgrade of Atlanta’s Woodruff Arts Center. Three new buildings for the High provide new exhibition space as well as enhanced education and programming facilities that more than double the size of the Museum’s landmark building designed by Richard Meier.

The Susan and John Wieland Pavilion, the largest of the three buildings, houses part of the High’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. The Pavilion features an expansive lobby with an outdoor terrace, retail shop, coffee bar and visitor amenities. Glass-enclosed bridges link the current High building to the Pavilion lobby and skyway levels.

On Thursday, March 30, AMA Atlanta and Creativity Atlanta are partnering to bring you a behind-the-scenes, after hours look at the new High, including a first look at new exhibits The Quilts of Gee’s Bend and Chuck Close: Self Portraits 1967-2005.

AMA on Location – The Center for Puppetry Arts with Author Bonnie Ulman, Trillion Dollar Moms
Location: The Center for Puppetry Arts
Recent statistics show that mothers control 80 percent of all household spending - a proportion that represents $1.7 trillion in potential sales for marketers. That network of spending extends even further when you consider that moms are faced with buying decisions - from purchases at the office to healthcare selections for aging parents - in nearly every aspect of their lives.

This all presents a potential windfall for savvy marketers. As co-author of Trillion Dollar Moms, Bonnie Ulman says many industries, brands and services are failing to tap into this lucrative demographic. Marketers need to update and tweak their strategies to realize growth in sales and increased market share. At the Nov. 3 AMA on Location, AMA Atlanta members and guests will have a chance to hear firsthand the insight shared in Trillion Dollar Moms - and to purchase signed copies of the book for the full story.

Following the presentation, our host, The Center for Puppetry Arts, will offer guided tours of the museum and facilities, including backstage areas where puppets are made and stored. Don’t miss out on this unique cultural treasure – a magical place where children and adults are educated, enlightened and entertained. Since 1978, the Center has introduced millions of visitors to the wonder and art of puppetry, and has touched the lives of many through enchanting performances, curriculum-based workshops and the hands-on global museum.

Location: Maggiano's Buckhead
Main sponsor: Autotrader.com
Business is a relationship game. When the 4 P's just don't seem to cut it anymore, what is the "X" factor that can help you cut through the clutter? The new branding differentiator just may be a three letter acronym most closely affiliated with a yawn or a group of propellor-heads huddled around a whiteboard down in
the basement.

CRM, or customer relationship marketing, is the new way hot companies are building and solidifying relationships with customers.

On Thursday, October 20th, join the AMA Atlanta's
Marketing Technology SIG and our panel of relationship and loyalty marketing experts. Leading our discussion will be Art Hall, Vice President of Sales & Customer Care Operations for NetBank; Amelia Fox, Director for Alvarez & Marsal Business Consulting; and Marsha Calfee, Director of CRM Delivery for NetBank.

Hall, Fox and Calfee will show us the sexy side of CRM and how this concept is helping companies to not only win customers, but also transform them into brand evangelists.

Join us as our Marketing Technology Special Interest Group presents Dena Malsom, Director of Marketing Communications and Branding at Cox Communications. Cox is a multi-service broadband communications company serving over 6 million customers nationwide.
Dena will discuss how Cox plans to integrate branding, promotions and sales into a cohesive marketing strategy by introducing Digital Max across a variety of marketing technologies. She will show how Cox has combined traditional TV ads with interactive efforts such as chatbots, blogging and even custom content creation to launch the initiative, as well as acquire and retain more customers.

Do you know your niche?

In today’s global marketplace, even niches are getting niched. If you’re not getting nervous yet, you should – especially now that consumers' purchasing decisions are increasingly being determined by word of mouth, peer-to-peer, price-comparisons, opinions, reviews, ratings and recommendations. According to trendwatch.com consumers are hooking up with (and listening to) their taste 'twins' - fellow consumers somewhere in the world who think, react, enjoy and consume the way they do. At our September Signature Luncheon, you’ll hear from Atlanta’s foremost niche marketing specialists, to help you learn what you need to know NOW about niche marketing, and how you can act on that knowledge.

The Evolution of Online Marketing
This past March, Yahoo! celebrated their 10 year birthday. Hard to believe isn’t it? In that unbelievably short period of time, the web has evolved into an extremely powerful marketing vehicle. Ten years ago it was banners, buttons, and a click through rate. Now, it's integrated marketing campaigns measuring success on consumer engagement, traditional branding metrics and offline, as well as online sales. This new medium, forever evolving, will be considered “traditional” marketing before we know it.
Over lunch, Mitch will discuss where online marketing has been, where it is, and where it's going so that you are better prepared to understand the power of the web when it comes to reaching your consumers.

In this session, we will cover how best to tell your story on the web and using email, how to proactively generate a “circle of friends” and keep track of them as well as ways to use search engines and other web tools to bring people to you.

Done correctly, incorporating e-commerce capability into your nonprofit’s technology can be an effective way to generate funds and further increase awareness of your organization. We will discuss the ways you can use e-commerce to be more productive and make transactions easier for your clients, sponsors, volunteers, and other stakeholders. This session will cover a variety of topics, including shopping carts and online stores, online donations, event registrations and more. Participants will also learn about some of the technical options and applications that can support these activities.

Costs for a workshop such as this would typically fall in the $75 to $100 range, but through a grant from the AMA Foundation, we are pleased to be able to offer this valuable workshop for deeply discounted rates.

Cost/registration: $15 members, $20 non-members registered before February 21. All cancellations must be made by noon February 21 to get a refund.
